Maastricht Highlights, Museums and Must See...

The Bonnefantenmuseum is displaying and accommodating long term exhibitions and temporary exhibitions of pre19th century art, old masters of Flemish painting and paintings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The museum is located at Avenue Céramique 250 on the South side of the city.

Museum De Historische Drukkerij (The Printing Museum) Located in the city center at Jodenstraat 22 6211 ER Maastricht (phone/fax: +314 3321 6376). The museum gives a picture of the different types of machines that were developed in the nineteenth century, including a collection of documents, printed paper and books.

The Natural History Museum of South Limburg. Beside a Botanical Garden the museum houses a collection of paleontology, geology, flora and fauna found in the South of Limburg. Located at De Bosquetplein.

The Dolls Museum an exhibition of dolls with a large collection of more than 400 dolls is on display in the museum. Located at Grote Gracht 41.

The Spanish Government Museum Located at Vrijthof 18 (phone +314 3321 7878) displaying furnishings of the 17th and 18th century including porcelain, silver, furniture, pottery, glassware and also paintings.

The Derlon Museum Cellar at Plankstraat 21 Roman traces of very old pavement was discovered during the construction from the 2nd to the 4th century in the basement of a hotel.

The Africa Center an exhibition and collection of African masks, sculptures, paintings and the daily life and developments in Africa. About 4 km from Maastricht in the village Cadier en Keer at Rijksweg 15.

The St.Servatius Basilica at Vrijthof, this medieval church is built above the grave of one of the first bishops in the Low Countries Servatius. The basilica owns a great collection of religious art that is open for public. The treasures in the Chapter Chapel consist of objects related to bishop St.Servatius and other objects like oriental silk, silver and ivory reliquaries. Other churches worth a visit are the gothic St. Jan Church and the Basilica of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk). (visit Sint Servaas)

The Mount St.Pieter Caves (St. Pietersberg phone +314 3325 2121) Two parts of the caves Grotten Zonneberg and Grotten Noord are open to public by guided tours, but remember the temperature in the cave is below ten degrees C. Limestone hewers hewed these not natural caves. The soft limestone or marl is then used to build houses. Because limestone is a sedimentary rock many fossils were found in the caves, some of them are to be seen in the Natural History Museum.

The Hotelschool Maastricht found in 1950 and housed in Kasteel Bethlehem in the suburb Limmel provides study for hotel management / hospitality management.

MECC Maastricht started in 1988 and offers a conference center with meeting rooms and 2 auditoriums for up to 350 guests and more than 30.000 m2 of exhibition space. The Exhibition & Congress Centre is located in Randwyck close to the Randwyck-Train-Station.

At Maastricht Train Station there is a shuttle bus to the airport, it takes about 20 min. The airport is situated 5 km north of Maastricht along motorway A2-exit 50. Long Parking is next to the terminal. Short parking is possible for at least 30 min. in front of the terminal. Be aware of common items forbidden on board like sisals, screwdrivers or even Nordic walking sticks.

Maastricht Sunday Shopping - Every first Sunday of the month is Sunday Shopping. The greater part of Maastricht's shops and department stores is located in the historical city centre around Market Suare and Vrijthof.
